Amazon India signs MoU with UP govt to promote crafts

Amazon India has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of Uttar Pradesh to support MSME entrepreneurs across nine districts as a part of the government’s One District One Product (ODOP) scheme. The e-commerce giant has now become the preferred online partner for the promotion of the state’s original and genuine art and crafts. Amazon India through its Kala Haat Program will help traditional industries, synonymous with respective districts of the state, leverage e-commerce to scale and access the Indian national market. Under the programme, a wide range of benefits will be offered to 300 MSME sellers registered the ODOP scheme. Amazon will provide these entrepreneurs training, account management guidance, marketing tools and world-class infrastructure of storage and delivery network to aid their progress through online selling. From Banarasi silk saris, to carpets from Bhadohi, Lucknowi Chikankari to leather goods from Kanpur, and leather footwear from Agra, from locks from Aligarh and brassware from Moradabad, to sports goods from Meerut and wooden products from Saharanpur, all of these will get access to a much broader customer base through the Amazon.in marketplace. Amazon India will connect these MSMEs to buyers across the country and get them to benefit from India’s booming digital economy. Through its ‘Kala Haat Program’ Amazon.in has been introducing lakhs of weavers, artisans and craftspeople across various clusters in India to digital commerce; hand-holding them with technology enablement and guidance through their online journey. Under the ODOP scheme, the state government has identified one product in each district of the state with a comparative manufacturing advantage. Weavers, craftspeople as well as marketing cooperatives enrolled under the scheme will receive fiscal support, easier access to continued credit facilities, as well as branding and marketing support to scale greater heights. With the option of selling products online through Amazon.in, rural artisans in UP will be able to cater to a wide spectrum of customers, get the best value for their unique products and grow their business in a short span of time. “The MSME sector accounts for almost 60 per cent of the total industrial output in Uttar Pradesh and has over 4.4 million units at present. These enterprises not only play an indispensable role in providing large scale employment opportunities at lower capital cost, but also help in industrialization of rural areas. Jaipur handicraft fair draws huge crowd

Hundreds of traders from across India are flocking to a handicraft fair in Jaipur, Rajasthan, where items from the region are a major draw them and customers. The exhibition in the city began on August 10 and will conclude on August 12.he main objective of the fair is to promote the handicrafts of Jaipur, particularly items of exportable quality. While interacting with reporters, Development Commissioner of Handicraft and Ministry of Textile, S. S. Gupta said that that the fair is organised to provide a range of world class handicrafts and goods that were being exported earlier across the globe. “I think that, it is a very good step because since last few years, the income of India has increased and a good consumer market is created here, so I believe that this is a good initiative that these products are being displayed in domestic market of India,” said Gupta. Exporters feel that Indian market has great potential and if it is explored properly then problems like recession can be countered and their profits can also be maintained.he handloom and handicraft exposition has not only provided a platform to the traders to market their products at a domestic level but also provided the customers an opportunity to pick items from a wide range under one roof. The handicraft fair was organised for the fourth time in the city by the Federation of Rajasthan Handicraft Exporters. Interacting with a journalist, Chairman of the organising committee, Forhex, Dilip Vaid said that the effort to explore local market has helped these exporters to counter economic turbulences in the global market. “All the exhibitors have worked hard in creating new products for this fair and this is the fourth year, in last three years, they have seen what customer likes and accordingly, they have displayed their products. This year, we have focused more on colours and in coordination of vibrant colours, many exhibitors have displayed various products at the fair,” said Vaid. Handicrafts like fabrics, furniture, mattresses, toys for children and dolls made of straw and clay were the major attractions besides dried flowers, glass beads, bamboo and cane items were also displayed at the fair. The unique handloom products and traditional artifacts were showcased at various stalls in large number. Rajasthan is land of art and craft and every town or village has produced many renowned artisans in the past. Reportedly, last few years have been very fruitful for Rajasthan’s handicraft industry as the export has increased manifold. UNESCO, Rajasthan govt join hands to promote state”s intangible cultural heritage

New Delhi/Jaipur, Sep 5 (PTI) UNESCO and the Rajasthan government joined hands on Thursday to promote music, art and craft forms, and other intangible cultural heritage of the state to spur socio-economic growth of several artist communities, officials said. The project, which will run for around three-and-a-half years, will be implemented in Jodhpur, Barmer, Jaisalmer and Bikaner districts, a UNESCO official said. “UNESCO India and the Rajasthan government”s tourism department today signed a partnership agreement to promote community-based responsible tourism based on the rich intangible cultural heritage of the state,” the official said. The project will focus on cultural heritage and traditions, such as pottery, weaving and other crafts, as well as music traditions, in order to create community-led and community-benefitting tourism opportunities, UNESCO said in a statement. “The project plans on developing 10 cultural hubs across the four districts, which will help promote diverse types of cultural heritage through hosting of events, performances, and sale of handicrafts. It will also build capacities of local communities to manage and promote their intangible heritage,” the statement said. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Eric Falt, Director, UNESCO Office in New Delhi and Rajasthan”s Minister of Tourism Vishvendra Singh in Jaipur at an event held at Paryatan Bhawan, the world body said in the statement. “This agreement represents a historic moment because it is the first time we are signing such a document with an international organisation. Most importantly, it will revive traditional cultural heritage and improve livelihoods,” the minister was quoted as saying in the UNESCO statement. Rajasthan, a top favourite among tourists, is home to three UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Walled city of Jaipur was inscribed on UNESCO”s World Heritage List in July. “India is second to none when it comes to intangible cultural heritage and Rajasthan undoubtedly constitutes its number one asset. We are very pleased to sign this agreement, which aims at promoting long standing Rajasthani traditions and adding new cultural destinations for tourists to visit,” Falt said. Another UNESCO official said, the project will be implemented by UNESCO with an NGO, Contact Base, and it aims to identify appropriate cultural heritage practices which are unique to the state. While tourism is an important source of revenue for Rajasthan, given its numerous palaces, forts, and museums, an average tourist usually stays in the state only for one to two days, UNESCO said in the statement. The Rajasthan project is based on a model successfully developed by UNESCO and Contact Base over the last six years in West Bengal, where it has “rejuvenated 22 different art forms, provided clear economic benefits to 15,000 artists and households and converted 18 marginalised villages into vibrant cultural destinations” in some of the districts, the official said. Six years after the applications were filed, Dindigul locks and Kandangi sarees in Tamil Nadu were finally granted their Geographical Indication (GI) tags in Chennai Thursday. With these, the number of products in Tamil Nadu with GI tags has now risen to 30. Of these, applications for 18 GI tags were filed by Chennai-based GI attorney for Tamil Nadu, Sanjai Gandhi. Advertising Speaking to Indianexpress.com, Sanjai Gandhi, the president of the Intellectual Property Rights Attorney Association (IPR) said that having a GI tag for a product is important since it grants the manufacturers of the product the authority and exclusive rights to produce the product in the particular region. Having a GI tag also helps consumers know that similar products which do not have the GI tag sticker and are sold around the globe are merely imitations or fake products. “More than 500 registrations have been handed to individuals so far,” said Gandhi. The advocate was recently appointed as a Nodal Officer for the promotion of GI products in Tamil Nadu by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. According to the World Trade Organisation, GI tags are place names (in some countries, also words associated with a place) which are used to identify products that come from these places and have these characteristics. The quality, reputation and other characteristics of a product can be determined by the place it comes from.
